Britannia Tyres congratulates staff member on lifetime service in the tyre industry

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:59 am

Britannia Tyres – one of the UK’s leading independent tyre retailers – is this month congratulating a long serving staff member on retirement after five and a half decades in the tyre industry.

Britannia Tyres congratulates staff member on lifetime service in the tyre industry

Steve Booth – Business Development Manager, Bridgestone. Peter Childs. Blair Dickens – Operations Director, Britannia Tyres

Peter Childs, from Mansfield, has a very long history in tyres – 55 years to be precise. He began his career as an apprentice with Goodyear in 1956, before joining his father’s company, Mansfield Tyre Service, in 1961. In 1963 Peter then moved to Reading and took up a position as branch manager at W. Briggs. After three years in Reading, he joined Dunlop Tyres as a sales representative in Coventry, moving on to a role as area manager in Coventry, Leicester, Derby and Nottingham.

In 1980 Peter decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and started his own tyre business – Mercia Tyres in Coventry – which he sold to Big City Tyres in 1999.

After nearly two decades of running his own company, Childs decided to spend the last few years of his working life with Britannia, first in its Coventry branch and then moving to Nuneaton. Now, having reached the respectable age of 70, he has decided to take retirement and return to a world of golf, fishing and gardening.

Peter commented: “I joined Britannia because I was impressed by its customer service ethos. It’s a family run business that prides itself on offering excellent service and I think that’s really important. It’s also part of the First Stop network, a group of independent tyre dealers backed by Bridgestone.

“Britannia is a company that really values its staff. It has been a really good employer to me and it has been a pleasure to watch the business grow – even throughout a recession. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my time here – joining Britannia was definitely the right choice for my last career move.”

He adds: “I’d like to thank Britannia and Bridgestone for all their support over the years. I will be sad to retire in many ways – after 55 years of unbroken service in the industry it will be strange not to go to work every day. However I am looking forward to retirement, and I am happy to leave with some very fond memories.”
Blair Dickens, Operations Director of Britannia Tyres, has been helping Peter to celebrate his retirement. He commented: “In this day and age very few people spend a whole lifetime working in one industry. It is a tribute to Peter that he has dedicated his working life to the tyre industry. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with him over recent years, and he will be greatly missed.”

Steve Booth, Business Development Manager at Bridgestone, works closely with Britannia to provide support through the First Stop scheme. He said: “Britannia Tyres is a very important customer for Bridgestone, and we are in touch on a regular basis. It has been my pleasure to work with and get to know Peter. On behalf of all his colleagues at Bridgestone, I would like to congratulate him on reaching retirement and wish him well in the future.”

£2,500 Presented to Child Neurology Fund

Filed under: Company News — admin @ 2:49 pm

First Stop cheque handover

First Stop last week made a presentation of £2,500 to the Paediatric Neurology Department at The Children’s Hospital for Wales, to go towards money being raised for the Child Neurology Fund to support children with severe epilepsy.

The Child Neurology Fund was established many years ago by the Children’s Hospital for Wales to support education and training about epilepsy. Bailey Williams, from Fairwater in Cardiff, is one little boy who benefits from the work done by the Fund, and his family are now working hard to support the hospital themselves.

Bailey is eight years old and suffers from Lennox Gastaut Syndrome; a severe form of epilepsy that affects his life every single day. His dad, Craig, works for a First Stop dealer, and on telling some of his colleagues Bailey’s story, he found a lot of people who wanted to help. As a result, First Stop has been raising money to help build a new video telemetry suite at the Children’s Hospital for Wales, which will aid in the diagnosis of epilepsy, improve access to correct medication and improve quality of life for hundreds of children.

The £2,500 presented today has been raised through a First Stop Roadshow which travelled around the UK during August this year and it officially kick-starts the fundraising for the new facility.

Johann te Water Naude, ‘Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the Children’s Hospital for Wales’ commented: “Epilepsy is not a well understood condition, but it has a devastating effect on many children and their families, and this is compounded by the fact that identifying the right medication to control it may take years.

“Telemetry suites can make a huge difference. They can monitor brain activity over a long period of time and so can aid in the diagnoses of different forms of epilepsy and help with choosing treatment and medication. However there are a limited number of facilities of this kind in the UK, and so we are aiming to build a new facility in Cardiff within the next four years which will significantly improve access to diagnosis and treatment for children in Wales suffering from epilepsy.

“This first installment of funds is excellent and we’d like to thank First Stop for all the work they’ve put in so far.”

Craig Williams said: “As a parent of a young child with epilepsy, I can really understand how this disease can affect people. Bailey’s epilepsy has a tremendous affect on our family’s life. Bailey himself suffers most of all – he constantly has a variation of seizures, including drop seizures where he literally falls to the floor, meaning he has to wear a helmet all the time to protect his head. He has to take a lot of medication daily, and he can’t play football and ride a bike as well other children his age can, as a result of poor coordination.

“As parents it’s very hard to watch your little boy suffer and that’s why we are doing all this fundraising – we want to do what we can to help other people in our situation. I personally would like to thank First Stop and Bridgestone for all their support, we couldn’t have got to this stage without them and the money they have helped us to raise so far is just fantastic.”

The 2010 Le Mans Series Final Round Comes To Silverstone Soon

Filed under: Motorsport — admin @ 2:38 pm

The Autosport 1000 Km endurance race that is the final round of the 2010 Le Mans Series, will be held at Silverstone next weekend, 10-12th September 2010.

Upton born former Formula 1 World Champion, Nigel Mansell will again be competing in the top category; LMP1 class. This fact could break all attendance records for Silverstone Circuit in this series.

The Mansell family, with sons Greg and Leo as the team co-drivers, celebrated a class victory last time out in Hungary despite finishing off the podium overall. It was a first class win for the Beechdean Mansell Ginetta Zytek team as Nigel Mansell continues his comeback after an injury sustained in the 24 Hour Le Mans Race.

The news that the Le Mans Intercontinental Cup will be the inaugural race at Silverstone (Petit Le Mans and China will host the other rounds) has seen three major manufacturers submit entries.

Two Audi R15 TDIs; successful in this year’s marathon at the Sarthe Circuit, have been entered with Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen paired to drive one car and Le Mans winner Timo Bernhard teamed with Dindo Capello.

Team Peugeot Total have entered just one car, the popular Nick Minassian will partner Anthony Davidson and the Aston Martin Racing Team have a pair of Lola’s at their disposal to add to the excitement of this year’s event.

This year’s event will also be the final time that spectators will be able to view the GT1 class entries as the Saleen will make its final bow at the Northamptonshire circuit.

History was made at the Hungaroring in the last round of the series with Strakka Racing taking the overall victory, the first time an LMP2 category car had won a round of the series.

Danny Watts, fast becoming a respected driver in this type of racing with his teammates, Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane will be keen to add to this success although they will face stiff opposition from current LMP2 Le Mans Series Champions Miguel Amaral and Olivier Pla.

In GT2 the Felbermayr Porsche of Lietz and Lieb have taken three victories this season with the team’s championship already secured. The win in Hungary extended the drivers lead in the championship and with former Grand Prix drivers Jean Alesi, Giancarlo Fisichella and ‘Jimmy’ Bruni all driving Ferraris as well as the CRS Racing pairing of Tim Mullen and Andrew Kircaldy and the Aston Martin Vantage of Rob Bell and Darren Turner all racing, the GT2 class is sure to whet the appetite of all the spectators.

So if you want an entertaining weekend at the UK’s number one racing facility, a chance to see some of the best sports prototype cars being put through their paces and of course the opportunity to see Nigel Mansell driving a highly tuned prototype as only Mansell can, get down to Silverstone on the 10th, 11th and race day on the 12th September 2010.

British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone – August 2010

Filed under: Motorsport — admin @ 12:12 pm

Team Aon took a clean sweep at Silverstone, with pole position, three race wins and three fastest laps. Tom Chilton won the first two races, with a bit of help from his teammate, before Tom Onslow-Cole got in on the act himself with victory in race three. Jason Plato continues to lead the championship with nine races remaining.

Tom Chilton won round 19 of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, after passing his teammate Tom Onslow-Cole, who led the early stages of the first race at Silverstone.

The two Fords were running with additional restrictions on their LPG-turbo engines for the first time, but that was not enough to stop them winning comfortably in Sunday’s first race.

Onslow-Cole started from pole position and led away from the line, with Chilton close behind. The pair opened up a gap back to Jason Plato in third, who was under pressure from his teammate Alex MacDowall.

Chilton trailed Onslow-Cole without looking like making a serious bid for the lead, until lap 11. Onslow-Cole slowed at the end of the start-finish straight – which he later explained was due to missing a gear – and that was enough to let Chilton through into the lead and the race victory.

Tom Chilton made it two wins in a row at Silverstone in round 20 of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, but only after he was gifted victory by teammate Tom Onslow-Cole for the second time today.

Chilton started from pole position, but it was Onslow-Cole who made the better start and led through the first corner. The two Fords were trailed by Andrew Jordan and Rob Collard, who both jumped Alex MacDowall and Jason Plato off the line.

Onslow-Cole appeared comfortable at the front and Chilton, carrying 45kg of ballast to Onslow-Cole’s 36kg, was unable to match his teammate. In race one, Onslow-Cole ceded the lead to Chilton after ‘missing a gear’. This time, he slowed along the straight as he started lap 17 and allowed Chilton through as they entered the first corner.

Unfortunately for Onslow-Cole, by slowing down for Chilton, who trailed him in the championship by 22 points heading into the race, the WSR BMW of Rob Collard was soon right on the tail of the now second-placed Focus.

As Chilton cruised to his second win of the day, Onslow-Cole was forced to defend as Collard sensed the chance to equal his best results of the year. Sure enough, after a couple of attempts, Collard was through and Onslow-Cole had to settle for third at the chequered flag.

Round 21 finally saw Onslow–Cole record a race victory, Paul O’Neill’s Honda and Matt Jackson’s BMW filling the podium positions in an eagerly contested race that saw Martin Depper crash out spectacularly at the start of the race as he struck the back of Alex MacDowell’s Chevrolet. MacDowell was able to continue with re-arranged bodywork and finished a creditable 10th only 19 seconds down on the race winner.
